Maximising sustainable nutrient production from coupled fisheries-aquaculture systems

چکیده

Aquaculture expansion is expected to meet growing demand for sustainable animal-source foods. Yet marine-fed species already require millions of tonnes wild-caught fish feed, over 90% which are nutritious food-grade species. Allocating feed human consumption could reduce pressure on marine resources while increasing seafood production. We examine micronutrient flows (the transfer micronutrients from fish) in Scotland’s farmed salmon industry, particularly reliant feeds, show that 1–49% essential dietary minerals and fatty acids available wild retained salmon. Using three alternative production scenarios we reducing feeds allocating produce more leave 66–82% the sea. global data aquaculture production, removing salmonid 3.7 Mt sea by 6.1 Mt.

Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture: A Synergy for Sustainable Food Fish Production

Inland capture fisheries and aquaculture have a number of divergent as well as overlapping relationships. In general, fishers are hunter/gatherers and socio-culturally quite distinct from fish farmers. The essential components of these cultures influence the way they view their respective environments and its resources. Institutionally, fisheries output is often controlled by managing the fishe...

metals such as copper. Once the manganese protein has folded, the metal-binding sites are inaccessible to other metals, and the protein can be safely exposed to the periplasmic envi ronment. In other words, the metal that binds to the protein is selected by the compartment in which the protein folds. Tottey and colleagues suggest that cytoplas mic metal insertion might be crucial not only for...

Biofloc Production Systems for Aquaculture

Biofloc systems were developed to improve environmental control over production. In places where water is scarce or land is expensive, more intensive forms of aquaculture must be practiced for cost-effective production. There are strong economic incentives for an aquaculture business to be more efficient with production inputs, especially the most costly (feed) and most limiting (water or land)...

Compartmentalisation in aquaculture production systems.

Compartmentalisation is a new tool for disease management within a country. In aquaculture, the successful application of compartmentalisation is largely dependent on the system of production and the epidemiology of the disease(s) for which the compartment is being defined. Therefore, compartmentalisation may not be universally applicable across all systems and diseases. The paper examines the ...
